In 1958, Junius Edwards won first prize in the Writer’s Digest Short Story contest for his story “Liars Don’t Qualify,” and the following year he received the Eugene F. Saxton Fellowship for creative writing. The short story "Liars Don't Qualify" exemplifies the struggle for voting rights, with the courage of a Black man who attempts to register to vote in the late 1950s, before the Voting Rights act of 1965 was passed.
